Open Source Leadership

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, is an example of an open-source leader. Take a look at the following video and compare android with iphone....

Which platform is better? Which has the greatest potential and Why?

I will post my answers later, but right now, I am interested in your thoughts. Whadayathank?

Mark, That android is cool! Don't know what whe iphone does as I've never had one & don't know what it can do, so it is hard to compare them. Linda

Thanks Linda,

The big difference is that iphone is proprietary software that can only be developed by Apple and its contractors. What Google is doing is giving away the source code for their phone software so that private developers can create software applications of their own. Cell phone providers will be able to pick and choose which applications that they want to offer to their customers. iphone works with only 1 phone and 1 provider, android will work with multiple phones and providers.

Actually Mark the iPhone is open souce for applications, as a matter of fact apple is giving away 100 million dollars to the best and brightest to develop programs. They release the SDK (Software Development Kit) for the iPhone months ago and it will connect the open source guru's to the iphone. Apple even went so far as to allow all developers to sell their apps in the itunes app store so everyone can get them immediately after release.

Now, about the android, awesome phone! But, it was announced a year ago, and has been pushed back twice, and google is only shelling out 10 million to push the developers to create applications. I think it will come out in about a year or two, but by then iPhone will have been sitting pretty for awhile.

Do i think the android will catch up? I hope so! competition in the marketplace is exactly what is needed and I don't think anybody can compete with apple except for google... If they give it the resources it needs. I'll buy one, but because then my iphone will be old hat. (Im the early adopter everybody talks about.)

Thanks Sean,
I didn’t know about the iphone sdk. It will be interesting to see which platform ends up with the best applications especially since Apple is offering more money.

While I am a huge fan of Apple and enjoy my macbook and my ipod, I think android will win. The reason... iphone is all about Apple and there is no such thing as a gphone.
